SUICIDE PREVENTION WORKSHOPS
In 2022 there were 21,881 suicides committed in Japan. Worse still, of this number a growing number were committed by students in elementary school, middle school, or high school. Despite these troubling statistics, it's important for us to remember the following Scriptural truth: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). Given this reality, how can Christian leaders rise to the task of ministering to those suffering from mental health crises in Japan?
As a response to this question, Missions Connex in partnership with Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is hosted a Suicide Awareness and Prevention Workshops online via Zoom. Workshop participants received free Suicide Awareness and Prevention training provided by Professor Jonathan Okinaga and Professor Cheryl Bell of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Attendees were equipped with Biblical approaches for addressing several common contributors to suicide: anxiety, depression, and sex abuse.
This Suicide Awareness and Prevention Workshop uniquely positions pastors, lay-leaders, and parents to provide much-needed spiritual care to their churches and communities, and as a result, further equip them for the tasks of evangelism and discipleship. The workshop was also designed to give teenagers tools by which to aid friends that may struggle with these issues. All course contents are in Japanese, English, and Portuguese.
